From caroling to hand-crafting ornaments for those in need, you'll be surprised to find out how much more there really is to these little ladies than just cookies and Christmas trees.
Contrary to popular belief, there's way more to the Girl Scouts than one might think. Guam Girls Scouts executive director Vicky Fish says that although it's nice that the group has developed a reputation for holiday firs and tasty cookies throughout the year, there's actually so much more that they do, like empowering girls to give back to their community. She highlights one project that they participate every Christmas that provides the members an invaluable lesson when it comes to budget, organization, sales and time management.
Described Fish, "This particular project started five years ago with Oceanic Resources - they likes to provide a nice gift for their tenants in the buildings that they look after, so they asked us about partnering to create a meaningful experience for girls where girls create gift baskets and then the company presents those as gifts."
With the gift baskets being just one of their activities, here's a few more you may be surprised to hear of as the girls never miss a chance to give back during the holiday season. "Girls 5 to 17 are involved with everything from caroling to making the ornaments for sugar plum," Fish continued. "For those who take a name from the Sugar Plum Tree, which we host here, the people buying a gift for a person in need are given an ornament as a thank you remembrance and those are crafted from Girl Scouts. We had some scouts at the northern end of the island participate in a project called 'Cookie Caper', which 900-dozen cookies were baked and shipped to deployed soldiers and also just those who are away from family and friends at Christmas time."
It's commendable to see such young members of society contributing in big ways. "So different levels of giving whether it's someone in need economically, or in need spiritually, the Girl Scouts are there to offer something special that says this is a happy time," reassured Fish.
